Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product uses conventions of a real media product, which one is Mr A - The hoosiers. We have used conventions of the real media product as they are all in costumes and are singing to the soundtrack we also have used this idea of costumes to portray a music video which is parrallel to the soundtrack.

This is a comparison to another music video in which is similar as we use the same comic effect as they have to make the fight scenes look more comic. This is Mr A hoosiers in which it is similar in many ways to our video. The idea was originally taken from 1960s batman programme in which they use comic effects like some of the above.

We also had ideas of using still images and putting them in at each new scene to represent a new scene in a comic book way. Before each scene we have put a transition of a still image in which it then goes on to a new scene of the music video.

Another idea that we have used is the costume scene during the costume scene we see videos of him thinking of new costume ideas in which he can use and wear. This idea was given to us by the spiderman film in which he has little videos of thought tracking on a shot in which us the audience see him thinking and designing the costumes and picking one that best suits him. Below is a contrast between their costume scene and ours in which we feel we done a good job at making the scene.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? (digipak, magazine advert)

Our main product and ancillary texts we believe was effective as this is because we was being given good feedback on how our digipak and magazine advert looked. People were saying how it fitted with what the music video was about and interested them to see our music video.

We wanted the digipak to look like it was about heroes as this will interest people to see what the song is about. We believe we would be able to sell the cd if we was going to market it.

We made sure that when we doing the digipak that it when with the music video as this would make it relevant rather than a digipak that has nothing to do with the song or music video. We also done the same with the magazine advert which will help to increase the amount of interest it will gain when people see the magazine advert.

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

After asking many people we was able to find out who liked our video, why they liked our video and what they would rate it.

I collected the results from the survey and the information was useful as it allowed us to know what was liked and what wasn't about the music video. 72% of the people who answered were male and 28% were female. 58% were over 18 and the rest were between 14 and 17. The types of music that people liked the most was Indie and then Drum and Bass. They all said they like the video and would recommend it to a friend however there was one person who disliked it the people that said they liked the music video said that the bits they liked were the fight scene and the costume scene. Most people disliked the band scene as it didn't look the part and they said it could have been done again to make it look more realistic. This is a criticism that will be taken into consideration for future reference. Every person that filled out the questionnaire all said that the song fit in with what the music video was about. Over 70% of the audience said they would purchase the cd if it was to be marketed.

Questions

1) Are You Male or Female
2)How Old Are You
3What is your favorite type of music
4)How often do you listen to music
5)Did you like the video
6)What was your favorite part
7)What could of been improved
8)Do you think the video matched the song
9)Would you purchase the song

Here is the feedback we got from the survey. click to enlarge the images. We used survey monkey to record and gather our information about what the audience thought of our music video and what they liked and disliked about it.

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Before we started constructing our music video we planned our music video storyboarding it as we were thinking of what shots to do and how to do it all. After we done the storyboarding we put it into a video in which we first started using the new software to make our video. We were learning how to use the new software and what sort of stuff we could now do with it.

We used new media technologies when constructing the video and one of these was a HD camera. We used a HD camera when getting all of our shots which meant our music video would be of a better quality once finished editing it all together.

To edit the shots together we had a new software which we used and this was final cut express. Having a new software meant that it was going to be a challenge to grasp and learn again a new piece of software to edit all of our shots together. After learning how to use we then began to realise how much more we could do with the new software then what we could previously do with the old software meaning we had more choice of transitions to pick from helping us to create a better music video.

We also used another software to create a comic book effect to one of shots this helped as it allowed us to create a still image using the software which was photoshop this allowed us to make a comic effect out of the still images which helped make our video look like a comic book being flipped open each time.

We also used a variety of other software which was used to either gather images for our digipak, poster or blog this was so that we could help make our blog look more colourful and interesting to keep people carry on reading the blog. We used google to collect pictures to post on our blog. We used wordle to create word clouds which consisted of a bunch of text converted into a word cloud which the most common words bigger than other words. Here is an example of wordle clouds.

Here is google in which was used to gather pictures.

During the making of the video we was regularly using email making sure that we were keeping the band updated on our progress on making the music video and letting them have a look at the video themselves on youtube. We was able to use hotmail to email them keeping them updated with how its coming along.

Before making the music video we had to get the music in which we could use for our music video, to do this we used a site called unsigned which consisted of unsigned independant artists. Once we chose the music we wanted we emailed them just asking if we could use their song in our video.

Digipack finished

The digipack is finally finished now all that is left to do is upload it to our blog. We was able to get the effect we was after using photoshop which allowed us to edit the picture to how we wanted. Photoshop allows people to manipulate a picture to how they want. The picture below has been manipulated using photoshop.

From the making of the music video I have learnt how to use new technologies such as a new hd camera and I have also learnt how to use new software such as final cut express. Overall I was able to increase my understanding of different technologies as I was able to use some of the same technology that I used to create my thriller work.

From the preliminary task I feel I have learnt how to lip sync correctly, I am now able to make the lip syncing coincide with the song correctly making it look fluent and like it is actually being sung. Also I have now learnt how to use final cut express as we used this to piece all our music video, I have found out that it allows you to do more on it than what we was able to do for our thriller coursework. With final cut express we was able to test certain things to what we could do with it we was able to do new things such as split screening the shots which meant we could have two people singing side by side on the screen making it look like they were singing to each other. As we were using final cut express we was always trying out new things to see what we could do with the video.

Music video finished

The music video is finally finished the last few bit was edited and put in. All that needed doing was editing bits into the fight scene like kapow, sploosh, wham and woosh this would help make the music video have a comic effect to it we also used the idea from 1960 batman which consisted of comic words when a punch was thrown at another person.

Emailing the artist

Andrew recently emailed Duane, who is a member of the band 22nd Century. They are the artist who's song we are using. we emailed him just to update him on the current progress of our music video and that we have nearly finished the video. When emailed him the first time he was excited to hear us to do a video using his song he asked us to email him personally if we were in need of any help. He also said if we were to upload it onto our personal Youtube accounts, too give them credit for the song and link the bands website. In return he said he would promote the video on the website so it could get more views, and a lot of views on Youtube was one of the success criteria for a music video so this would help our video to be a success.

The audience theory - The Bobo Doll experiment

The Bobo doll experiment was the name of two experiments conducted by Albert Bandura in 1966.

The bobo doll experiment is a very controversial piece of research that proved that children copy violent behaviour.

The idea was children watched a video where an adult violently attacked a clown called a bobo doll. The children would then be taken to a room with attractive toys in which they were not permitted to touch. The children were then led to another room with the bobo doll. The children were then left in the room to do what they wanted with the bobo doll. 88% of the children imitated the violent behaviour that they had earlier seen. 8 months later 40% of the children reproduced the same violent behaviour.

Using different software

Here we have used the technology we have to create a still image in to a cartoon comic in which we will put into the video to make it have a comic book effect.

Editing the band sequence AGAIN

We got the band sequence again all that we had left to do was to edit the band scene in to the video and match the music with the lip syncing. As we were doing this we were also touching a few other parts of the video up, speeding up parts of the video after recieving feedback being told it could do with being more quick paced which should help to keep the audiences attention.

Re taking band sequence AGAIN

We had to retake the band sequence the reason for this was the first time we done we had good costume which fit in with the music and was parallel. We then done it a second time as the first band sequence didn't have a variety of shots in it and the costume was not the same as first time round. After being given feedback we was told that the costumes did not fit the music so we had to retake the shot which we got better costumes to fit the music making it parallel to the music.
